Convert Apple Log 2 before you grade it

Apple Log 2 keeps Apple Log's curve but records in Apple Wide Gamut, a wider colour space than the Rec.2020 that the original Apple Log uses. A LUT made for Apple Log reads the colours as if they were Rec.2020, so they come out wrong even when the brightness looks right. Use a LUT built for Apple Log 2, which converts the colour space as well as the curve, then grade on top.

The workflow

01

Record in log

Settings, then Camera, then Formats, with Apple ProRes and Log selected. On the iPhone 17 Pro that log is Apple Log 2.

02

Take the Apple Log 2 version

Every free look on this page has an Apple Log 2 file. It contains the conversion to Rec.709, so don't stack Apple's conversion LUT underneath it.

03

Apply it in your editor

DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and CapCut desktop all load .cube files. The Blackmagic Camera app can also show it while you shoot.

04

Grade on top

Set exposure and white balance before the LUT if the shot needs it, then fine-tune after.
