Matte Fade — Free Film Matte LUT
Soft, lifted matte with milky shadows and faded contrast — the indie film aesthetic. Free .cube LUT for DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Final Cut, and CapCut.
Matte grades became the defining look of indie film and premium social content for a reason: lifted blacks and soft contrast create a dreamy, editorial quality that doesn't feel overcooked. This LUT captures that aesthetic cleanly.
What it looks like
Blacks are lifted significantly — shadows become grey rather than true black — giving the image a milky, faded quality. Contrast is compressed, so the tonal range sits in a narrower band between bright mid-grey and soft highlight. There's a subtle cool cast in the shadows and a slight warmth in the mids. The overall effect is airy, premium, and very Instagram-friendly.
What it's good for
- Lifestyle and fashion — clean, editorial aesthetic that reads expensive
- Travel vlogs — makes any location feel curated and intentional
- Portrait and headshot — soft contrast is naturally flattering on skin
- Short-form social content — immediately recognisable modern look
How to use it
Download the .cube file and import it into your NLE:
- DaVinci Resolve → Color page → LUTs panel → right-click to import
- Premiere Pro → Lumetri Color → Creative → Look → Browse
- Final Cut Pro → Effects → Custom LUT → assign the file
- CapCut → Adjust → LUT → import
Because this LUT lifts the blacks significantly, apply it before any manual lift adjustment — otherwise you may double-lift and clip the shadows. Use the contrast and brightness controls to fine-tune the look after applying.
