Luttie for After Effects

Grade once, apply to the comp.
As a standard .cube.

After Effects applies LUTs two different ways and builds them neither. Grade a reference frame in Luttie, export a .cube, and drop it on an adjustment layer over the whole comp.

Exports .cube, .3dl — no plugin or extension to install.

Getting a Luttie LUT into After Effects

  1. 1Export your grade from Luttie as a .cube file
  2. 2Add an adjustment layer above your footage
  3. 3Apply Effect → Utility → Apply Color LUT… and choose your .cube
  4. 4Lower the adjustment layer's opacity to dial the strength back

Building the look

  1. 1Export a frame from your comp
  2. 2Grade it in Luttie until the look is right
  3. 3Export as a 33-point .cube
  4. 4Apply it on an adjustment layer over the whole comp

What trips people up in After Effects

The three things worth knowing before you blame the LUT.

Apply Color LUT has no intensity slider

Put it on an adjustment layer and use that layer's opacity, or use Lumetri Color → Creative → Look instead, which does have Intensity.

Adjustment layer over the comp beats per-clip

One adjustment layer grades everything below it, so a look change is one edit rather than one per layer.

Watch the working colour space

If the project is set to a linear or wide-gamut working space, a Rec.709 creative LUT can read very differently than it does in Premiere. Check the project colour settings before blaming the LUT.

Custom LUTs in After Effects

How do I apply a custom LUT in After Effects?

Add an adjustment layer above your footage and apply Effect → Utility → Apply Color LUT, then choose your .cube file. Alternatively, Lumetri Color → Creative → Look loads the same file and adds an Intensity slider.

Can After Effects create a LUT?

No. After Effects applies LUTs but has no export-a-LUT command — you can save an effect preset, but that only works inside Adobe apps. Luttie renders a real .cube that works anywhere.

Is the LUT the same one I'd use in Premiere?

Yes. Both read standard .cube files, so one export covers your Premiere edit and your After Effects comps.

After Effects applies LUTs. Luttie makes them.
