4K LUT — 65-Point Cinematic LUT for UHD Footage

Most LUTs you download are 33-point: a 33×33×33 grid of colour samples, and everything between those samples is interpolated. On a 1080p timeline that's invisible. On 4K it isn't always — a UHD frame carries roughly four times the pixels, and the wide smooth areas that fill a big frame (sky, skin, a lit wall, a studio backdrop) are exactly where interpolation error shows up as banding.

This one is built at 65 points — 274,625 colour samples instead of 35,937. It's the high-density size DaVinci Resolve exports natively, so it loads anywhere a 33-point file loads, just at about 7 MB instead of 1 MB.

The look

4K Cinematic is deliberately restrained. A grade that looked good on a phone preview tends to fall apart on a 65-inch screen, where every push in contrast and saturation is four times more visible. So this is a base grade, not a filter: filmic contrast with a rolled-off shoulder, a light teal-shadow / warm-highlight split, skies given a little depth, video greens pulled back, and skin held warm against the teal so faces don't turn to plastic.

It's the LUT to put at the bottom of the stack — the one that makes UHD footage look finished before you add anything of your own on top.

When the extra resolution matters

  • Skies and gradients — the single most common place banding appears in 4K delivery.
  • Skin in soft light — long smooth tonal ramps across a face.
  • Heavy grades — the more a LUT bends colour, the further apart its sample points effectively land.
  • 8-bit footage — less data to start with, so less headroom to absorb interpolation error.

If you're cutting 1080p and delivering to social, a 33-point LUT is genuinely fine — the free LUT library is full of them. The honest case for 65 points is UHD delivery and finishing.

How to use it

  1. Download the .cube file (about 7 MB — larger files are the point here).
  2. Import it in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or CapCut.
  3. Apply it to Rec.709 footage. If you shot log, put your camera's conversion LUT first and this one after.
  4. Grade on top: exposure and white balance per shot, then your own creative pass.

FAQ

Is a "4K LUT" a real thing?

Not as a marketing category — a LUT has no resolution in pixels, and any LUT can be applied to 4K footage. What is real is the LUT's point count, and that's what this file changes: 65 points instead of 33, which is what actually helps on high-resolution footage.

Will it work on 1080p or 8K?

Yes. A LUT doesn't care about frame size. The extra density simply gives smoother results the more pixels and the flatter the gradients you throw at it.

Why is the file so much bigger?

65³ is 274,625 lines of colour data against 33³'s 35,937 — roughly 7.6× the samples, and 7.6× the file. That's the trade you're making for the smoother interpolation.
