The CineStill 400D look

CineStill 400D is a daylight cinema-style colour negative for stills, and its look is warm, clean and cinematic: soft highlights, rich but not loud colour, forgiving in harsh sun. Luttie's Daylight 400 is shaped after it, and it suits CineStill 50D's look too.

Where it comes from

CineStill's daylight films bring the look of motion-picture negative to still cameras. 50D is the slow, fine-grained one; 400D, released in 2022, is the fast, flexible one made for everyday shooting. Both scan warm and filmic, with the gentle highlight roll-off cinema stocks are known for, and both are prone to halation like 800T, though daylight scenes give them less to glow round.

How to grade it

In order. Every control below exists in the Luttie editor, free to use in your browser.

01

Film panel → Daylight 400

Pick Daylight 400 as the negative.

02

Print → Scan

Scan for the stills look; Cinema Print for a motion-picture finish.

03

Exposure

0 to +0.5 EV. It holds highlights well, so a little overexposure keeps shadows clean.

04

Film Effects → Halation

A little (Amount 15 to 25) for the slight glow on bright highlights.

05

Export

Export a .cube (Luttie Pro) for Resolve, Premiere or Final Cut, or a graded image straight from the editor.

When it works

Sunny days, beaches and travel

Portraits in daylight that should feel cinematic

Video that should look shot on film

Golden hour, where it stays warm without going orange

When to avoid it

Night and tungsten-lit scenes: it's a daylight stock and goes orange under bulbs. Halation 800 (shaped after CineStill 800T) is the night one.

Frequently asked

50D is slower and finer-grained, with slightly cleaner colour; 400D is faster and a little warmer. Their looks are close, so Daylight 400 covers both: add Film Effects grain for 400D's texture, leave it off for 50D's cleanness.

You can put the 400D look on your own photos and footage free in Luttie's browser editor, and download the graded image. Exporting it as a .cube LUT is part of Luttie Pro.

No. Daylight 400 follows the general shape of a daylight cinema negative, steeper and warmer to suggest how 400D scans, chosen by eye. It hasn't been measured against real film, and Luttie isn't affiliated with CineStill.

Build it on your own footage

Drop in a photo or pull a frame from a video, grade it in the browser, and export a .cube LUT for DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or CapCut.
