Adjust Your Color Grade by Talking to It

Grade Chat lets you refine a color grade conversationally — type what you want to change and the AI adjusts the live settings incrementally. No more hunting sliders.

There's a gap between knowing what a grade should feel like and knowing which slider to move to get there.

Grade Chat fills that gap. It's a conversational AI panel in Luttie's editor that adjusts your live color grade based on what you type. Not a filter. Not a preset. It reads your current settings, interprets your request as a delta, and applies targeted changes — leaving everything else alone.

How It Works

You type what you want to change. The AI figures out which parameters to adjust and by how much.

"push the teal in the shadows more"

The AI shifts the shadow color wheel toward teal, increases the saturation in that tonal range, and tells you what it did: "Shifted shadows toward teal and lifted saturation slightly." Small chips below the response show the exact values changed: shadows hue 195° · sat +8.

The changes hit the editor immediately. They're in your undo history. You can keep typing.

"a bit more contrast"

"make the highlights warmer"

"actually back off the shadows a little"

Each turn the AI knows the full conversation history and the current state of your settings. It doesn't start from scratch — it adjusts from wherever you are.

What Makes It Different From Just Moving Sliders

The sliders require you to know which parameter does what. Temperature controls the warmth of the whole image. Shadow hue shifts the color in the dark tones specifically. Contrast compresses the tonal range. These are all different tools, and knowing which one achieves the feeling you're after is the skill that takes time to develop.

Grade Chat removes that translation layer. You can say what you're trying to achieve in visual or emotional terms and let the AI work out which parameters to move.

It's also faster for small adjustments. Finding the right slider, reading the current value, deciding how far to push it — that's a lot of micro-decisions. Typing "a bit warmer" is one decision.

The Workflow: Generate, Apply, Refine

Grade Chat is designed to work alongside AI Grade, not replace it.

Step 1 — Generate a starting look with AI Grade

Open the AI Grade panel, type a description of the mood you're going for. Get three distinct color grading variants back as exportable .cube LUTs.

Step 2 — Apply the closest one

Pick the variant that's closest to what you want. Apply it — all its parameters load into the editor.

Step 3 — Refine with Grade Chat

Open Grade Chat and describe what's not quite right. The AI adjusts only what you mention. Everything else stays put.

This is the full AI-assisted color grading loop: broad strokes first, then incremental refinement, then manual tweaks if needed.

What It Can Adjust

Grade Chat has access to all the main color grading parameters:

  • Basic correction — temperature, tint, brightness, contrast, saturation, vibrance
  • Tone controls — blacks, whites, faded film
  • Color wheels — shadow, midtone, and highlight hue, saturation, and lightness independently
  • Intensity language — "slightly" moves values by 5–15; "more" by 15–30; "a lot" by 30–50

Things like curves, HSL secondaries, film grain, halation, and vignette are handled by the dedicated panels in the sidebar.

Keeping Context Across Turns

The conversation history is passed to the AI on every request, so it knows what it suggested three turns ago. This matters for refinements like:

"actually that's too much — back it off a bit"

The AI knows what "that" refers to because it can see the previous exchange.

The conversation resets when you click "Clear chat". Your settings stay wherever they are — the chat history is separate from the grade.

Every Change Is Reversible

Grade Chat writes to the same settings store as the sliders. Every turn is a new undo step. If the AI does something you don't like, Cmd+Z undoes it and you can describe what you wanted differently.

Nothing in Grade Chat is permanent until you export or save.

Available on Pro

Grade Chat is available to Pro subscribers and users on an active trial. It shares the 20 requests-per-hour budget with AI Grade — so if you generate a few looks with AI Grade and then refine with Grade Chat, all of those count toward the same hourly limit.
