Canon C-Log3 Grading Workflow — From Flat to Cinematic

C-Log3 is Canon's widest dynamic range profile. Here's the complete grading workflow — technical correction, creative grade, and LUT export for Resolve and Premiere.

C-Log3 is Canon's most capable log profile, available on the EOS R5, R6, R6 II, R5C, and the Cinema EOS line. It captures a wide dynamic range by flattening the image — like all log profiles, it looks washed out straight out of camera and needs a technical correction before grading.

Canon's colour science is accurate and neutral, which makes C-Log3 footage forgiving to grade. Here's the full workflow.

C-Log3 vs C-Log vs C-Log2

Canon has three log profiles:

  • C-Log — original log profile, moderate dynamic range, available on older bodies
  • C-Log2 — widest dynamic range, very flat, harder to grade, used on cinema cameras
  • C-Log3 — best balance of dynamic range and gradeability, recommended for most EOS R shooters

For EOS R mirrorless cameras (R5, R6, R6 II), C-Log3 is the right choice. It's easier to grade than C-Log2 and has significantly more dynamic range than standard profiles.

Step 1 — Download the Canon Technical LUT

Canon provides official LUTs for C-Log3 on their support pages. The file you want:

CinemaGamut_CanonLog3-to-BT709_WideDR_65_FF_Ver.2.0.cube

Find it on the Canon USA support site — search "Canon Log look-up table" on usa.canon.com, navigate to your camera model's support page, and look under the Software tab.

Download and save it somewhere accessible.

Step 2 — Extract a Frame

Luttie works on still images. Get a representative frame from your C-Log3 clip:

  • VLC: Pause → Video → Take Snapshot
  • QuickTime: Pause → Edit → Copy → paste into Preview → export PNG
  • Premiere: Export a single frame from the Source Monitor

Choose a frame with a mix of highlights, shadows, and any subjects you care about (faces, sky, architecture).

Step 3 — Apply the Technical LUT

  1. Open luttie.app/editor and upload your frame
  2. In the Creative section, drag the Canon C-Log3 .cube file into the LUT drop zone
  3. The image should now look neutral — realistic colour, correct exposure

Canon's colour science is known for being accurate and natural. After applying the correction, skin tones should look clean without any colour cast, and the overall image should resemble a high-quality JPEG from the same camera.

Check:

  • Neutral surfaces (grey card, white walls) should have no colour cast
  • Skin tones should look natural — Canon renders skin particularly well
  • Highlights should be bright but retained — C-Log3 gives good highlight recovery
  • Shadows should be clean — Canon's shadow noise is well-controlled

Step 4 — Build the Creative Grade

Canon's neutral colour science means you're starting from a clean base. No fighting unwanted casts or colour shifts — you're adding the look you want.

Basic Correction

  • Exposure: usually correct after the technical LUT, adjust slightly if needed
  • Contrast: +10 to +15 to restore punch
  • White balance: Canon Camera WB is reliable in most conditions, adjust if shooting under mixed or artificial light

Curves

  • Master S-curve: subtle, adds depth without clipping
  • Red channel: pull down slightly for a cooler, more neutral look, or lift for warmth
  • Blue channel: push up slightly for a cool, analogue feel, or pull down for warmth

Colour Wheels

  • Shadows: teal or blue push for cinematic depth
  • Midtones: amber push for warmth, or keep neutral
  • Highlights: slightly warm or pure neutral

HSL

  • Skin tones (oranges): very slight saturation boost or leave at 0 — Canon renders them well already
  • Sky (blues/cyans): reduce saturation -5 to -10 for a more grounded look

Step 5 — Export and Apply

Click Export LUT (.cube) from the bottom of the right panel. The exported file contains the Canon C-Log3 correction plus your creative grade.

Apply in your NLE:

  • Premiere Pro: Lumetri Color → Creative → Look → Browse
  • Final Cut Pro: Effects → Custom LUT → assign the .cube
  • DaVinci Resolve: Import LUT, apply in Color page
  • CapCut: Adjust → LUT → import

Canon-Specific Tips

Highlight rolloff is forgiving. Canon's highlights recover smoothly — don't be afraid to push exposure a stop if the frame is slightly dark. The rolloff into clipping is gradual and cinematic rather than harsh.

Skin tones are a Canon strength. Canon's colour science renders skin particularly accurately. If your grade is shifting skin tones in an unwanted direction, use HSL Secondary to isolate the orange/skin range and correct it independently.

For C-Log2 on Cinema EOS: The workflow is identical but the technical LUT is different — use the C-Log2 version from Canon's LUT library. C-Log2 has more latitude but is more aggressive — keep an eye on shadow detail when grading, as heavy lifts can expose noise faster.
